Compared to the classic sit-up that isolates only some of your abdominal muscles, planks fire into all of the muscles of your core along your sides, front and even your back, giving your abs that sought-after definition and your back and spine the strength it needs for healthy, pain-free movement.
Planks can be done anywhere with no equipment and are easier on your body than conventional crunches. Sit-ups can injure your back by pushing it hard against the floor and can overwork your hip flexors, leading to lower back pain. Planks, done in the proper position, are safe and healthy for your back and can be easily advanced as you become stronger!
